The Funk of Collage

FOKUS' 10-week residency at The Brooklyn Children's Museum | The Art of Collage
Winter 2015 - 2016

The Art of Collage will introduce collage as an art form to 28 students and highlighting the accessibility, power and importance of collage. In addition to teaching youth about storytelling through collage art, we also aim to introduce how this art form is a vehicle to address issues of social justice. We will also attempt to demonstrate the many ways that collage already exists in our environments (homes, streets, schools etc) and the way we may be participating in collage-making without being 100% aware of it. Additionally, we will create a supportive work environment where the class is comfortable trying new things, struggling and making mistakes.

Each session will focus in on a different sub-topic in collage: shape, color, patter, texture, storytelling and sketching. Some specific artists we will cover include: Wangechi Mutu, Henri Matisse, Romare Bearden and Xenobia Bailey. Students will also be working towards a final collage project, which they will present at an exhibition at The Brooklyn Children's Museum.
